The last interesting thing that was mentioned was when an investor had asked if they look to grow attendance in the parks. Jim Reid Anderson replied that their real focus will be to the raised pricing of their admission, passes etc. instead of attendance numbers. He also added that while they can offer discounts to bring in more visitors, they were hoping not as much- since this has been their strategy for the past decade which brought the company to bankruptcy in 2009. So basically, the company won't make money from attendance, so they're focusing on cutting discounts and raising admission prices and rates.
In a recent investor's call, the head honchos of the Six Flags corporation announced the results from April-June (Q2) in the parks. Revenue for the company from the last three months was up 5% and attendance was quote, "up slightly over prior year". To sum this up in broader terms, it was a successful quarter of the year for the parks (and chain). But, the interesting slice of information was actually when the CEO Jim Reid Anderson talked about their new financial strategy for the future. After saying that the chain had a history of "overly aggressive discounts", he said that the unnecessarily large discounts were not thought out well, and in the future, there will be less of these in the long run. And for the discounts that will remain, they plan on offering the best offers during the off-season and smaller discounts during summer and peak days. In addition to cutting out some major discounts, the company is planning on increasing the general pricing of tickets as well. FINALLY Magic Mountain decides to begin a special effects show over one of their watery lakes! The new for 2011- Rhythm of The Night show began back in May, but being that we never really knew what this was about, we never got a chance to explore it earlier.. The show takes place in front of the Plaza Fountain with dancers and music while pyrotechnics, fireworks, and even lasers run behind them over the fountain and on the waterfall. Because of the commotion of the fireworks and fire, Tatsu and Revolution actually close for about 20 minutes- A similar tactic California Adventure uses on it's Paradise Pier attractions during World Of Color. Can you spot the firework shooters? If you can't find them on the picture, here's what they look like up close. Now refer back to the above picture and see where the fireworks (and fire) shoot out.
Here's the second set of small changes we stumbled upon while strolling the park on Saturday.. Did you find any? Don't forget to post them here > It's the same spot that overlooks the Waterfront down below that has gotten a bit of a touchup with concrete, State-Hopper advertisements, a bench, and poles. If you can't notice the change above, the only thing that has been ADDED is the Rooms For Let sign. The Toy Shop graphic is nothing new of course. But the park recently added the Winslow Schott's graphic above- reffering to the Superman series villain: The Toyman (aka Winslow Schott). The S.T.A.R Labs isn't new either, but Hamilton Technologies sure is. Hamilton Technologies is owned by Superman series Professor Hamilton. The S.T.A.R Labs graphic refers to the S.T.A.R Lab facilities as seen in Superman. *The Los Angeles lab facility is listed as "specializing in genetics and disease control".
For all you Los Angeles folks, this might be some worthy advice if you didn't know already- The 405 Freeway will be closed for about 10 miles while crews demolish the Mulholland Drive Bridge. Exciting!! Well, not really for all of those on the L.A freeways this weekend. The closure is expected to cause massive traffic jams and congestion even though several warnings like ours is in place. BUT- This could be a good summer Saturday and Sunday for Magic Mountain in terms of crowds! Since the majority of people are urged to stay off the roads (or at least the westside roads) , this could eliminate a significant amount of visitors at the park; L.A Folk at least. The traffic might very well affect the park's employees from the Los Angeles area heading to work as well. Many organizations are advising people to use the alternate routes if they must head over to the ''Carmageddon'' zone (see here). Where the average 500,000 cars will go and stretch no one knows for sure, but this will be an interesting weekend to see how Magic Mountain's attendance is impacted.. If anyone DOES visit, let us know how it goes. What Will Be Closed:- 405 NORTH will close between the 10 and 101 - 405 SOUTH will close between the 101 and Getty Center Drive. When will it be closed:- The 405 will close at 7pm on Friday. - The freeway is planned to re-open5am Monday. Where Are the alternate routes:The Little stuff is always cool, especially when it involves our favorite theme park! All The Small Changes highlights the small things that change at Magic Mountain for the better, or even sometimes worst! We invite you to join us in our search for the small changes made in the park this summer and beyond! Feel free to submit a change in our special forum thread (it's totally free- no signing up required!) We started with a few examples below... As minor as it might be, some of those buttons on Log Jammer's jet spray machines used to be cracked open, chipped, and looking pretty tired in general. Now the park is working to fix these buttons into a brand new state like the one above. As unfocused as our camera is in this shot, you can still see the brand new menu in the Cyber Cafe.. The three digital sections or TV's rotate every now and then to display ads as well as the menu. SQUID HATS have made the rise in gaming at Magic Mountain recently being added to the prize stock winners choose from. Stylish?
